Matthew Mitcham is well known as an Olympic Gold Medallist and recognised as one of Australia’s greatest athletes. He is also an author, popular television personality, a social media guru, and a captivating and inspiring corporate speaker.

In the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing, Matthew executed the greatest dive in Olympic history, and became the first Australian male to win an Olympic Gold medal since Dick Eve’s plain high diving win in 1924.

Matthew was 34 points behind Chinese diver Zhou Luxin in the nail biting final rounds of the 10m platform finals, and after Zhou scored 74.80 on his last dive, Matthew still needed to score a seemingly impossible 107.30 to win the gold. He drew upon his talents and performed a phenomenal dive, resulting in a perfect score of 4 tens from the judges and achieving a total of 112.10, which is the highest score in Olympic history for a single dive.

Following his Gold Medal win in Beijing, Matthew Mitcham continued to take the world by storm by winning gold at the FINA World Cup and the Canada World Cup, resulting in him finishing 2010 with the World Number One ranking for the 10m platform event. In what was an already busy year, Matthew also competed in the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi and took out silver medals in four different events. In 2011 he only competed in one international event, the Canada Cup and won gold. The Australian Open Championships took place in 2012 and Matthew won yet another gold in the 10m Platform event.

Matthew went on to compete at the 2012 Olympic Games in London, despite battling an injury. Unfortunately he failed to make the finals and although he didn’t meet the high expectations he had set for himself, his focus, strength and determination had earned him the title as one of the most likeable athletes in Australia. Mitchem’s down to earth personality and communication with his fans during the Olympic Games caused his fans and followers on his social media accounts to explode in numbers. Earning over 80,000 Facebook fans and 40,000 Twitter followers during this time lead to Matthew being recognised as the Most Influential Australian Athlete on Twitter during the Olympic Games, and the subsequent inclusion in Tom Waterhouse’s Top 10 Under 30 Social Media Influencers. He was also awarded the GQ Men of the Year Award for Social Force of the Year in 2012.

Matthew’s talents extend further than his sporting career with his charismatic and genuine personality shining through in the media. From interviews, commentary positions, documentaries and TV filming, right through to TV commercials and live broadcast hosting – Matthew has had extensive experience in both Free-To-Air and Pay TV. He has undertaken many roles such as being the FOXTEL ambassador for the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games and also the 2012 London Olympics Games. Adding to his television appearances, Matthew co-hosted FOXTEL’s coverage of the Mardi Gras and was a contestant on Season 2 of Australia’s Greatest Athlete.

In December 2012, Matthew released his much-anticipated autobiography Twists and Turns which received amazing reviews and was a success worldwide. The Sydney Morning Herald regarded the book as “a searingly frank memoir”. Matthew embarked on a book tour throughout 2012-2013 which showcased his talents both in and out of the water.

Matthew has worked with some of the biggest companies in Australia, including Macquarie Bank, FOXTEL, Amex Australia, Telstra and many more. During this time he has been considered to be an inspirational corporate speaker due to his ability to adapt his story and experiences in life to suit the audience, and his clients.

On 28 January 2016, Matthew announced he would retire from professional diving. Mitcham said, “I’ve had a really good run, and I’m so grateful that I’ve been able to do what I love for as long as I have.”
